Outrage in Kolkata as Law Student Allegedly Gang-Raped on College Premises

A horrific incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba area has sent shockwaves across the city, as a 24-year-old female law student was allegedly gang-raped on the college premises on the evening of June 25, 2025. The assault, which took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM in a guard room adjacent to the students’ union office, has sparked widespread protests and reignited debates over women’s safety in educational institutions.

According to the victim’s complaint filed with the Kasba Police Station, the primary accused, Manojit Mishra, a former student and temporary non-teaching staff member with reported ties to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing, physically assaulted her after she rejected his marriage proposal. Two current students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, allegedly assisted Mishra by restraining the victim and recording the assault, threatening to leak the footage online if she reported the incident.

Swift police action led to the arrest of all three accused. Mishra and Ahmed were apprehended near Talbagan Crossing on June 26, while Mukhopadhyay was arrested from his residence in the early hours of June 27. The police seized their mobile phones for forensic analysis to investigate the alleged video evidence. The victim underwent a preliminary medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College, and the crime scene was sealed for further forensic investigation.

On June 27, the accused were produced before the Alipore Court, which remanded them to police custody until July 1. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the incident, demanding a detailed police report within three days and urging comprehensive support for the victim, including medical, psychological, and legal assistance.

The incident has drawn parallels to the August 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, intensifying public outrage. Protests erupted outside South Calcutta Law College, with student organizations like the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) demanding justice. The incident has also sparked a political firestorm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the TMC-led state government of failing to ensure women’s safety. BJP leaders, including Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari, pointed to Mishra’s alleged TMC connections, citing social media images of him with prominent party figures. The TMC condemned the incident, assured strict punishment for the perpetrators, and dismissed the BJP’s accusations as attempts to politicize the tragedy. The party also highlighted the need for the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to address such crimes.

As Kolkata grapples with yet another case of violence against women, the incident has underscored the urgent need for stronger safety measures in educational institutions. The ongoing investigation and public response will likely keep this issue at the forefront of the city’s consciousness in the days to come.
