In a spine-chilling twist to what was supposed to be
a romantic honeymoon, newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi was brutally murdered in
Meghalaya last month. The case has now taken a dramatic turn with the arrest
and confession of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her alleged lover, Raj
Kushwaha, who admitted to plotting Raja’s murder.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of
Police Vivek Syiem, the murder was a pre-planned conspiracy hatched in Indore,
Madhya Pradesh, where all three individuals resided. The motive? A mix of personal
relationship and joint business interests between Sonam and Raj.
The Murder Plot
Raja and Sonam got married on May 11, and soon
after, left for a honeymoon trip across Northeast India. Their journey took
them through Assam, including a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, and eventually to
Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya.
On May 23, while trekking to the scenic Wei Sawdong
Falls, Raja was reportedly led into a gorge where he was attacked by three
hired assailants, allegedly orchestrated by Raj. Police investigations reveal
that Sonam was constantly sending her live location to Raj, enabling the
attackers to track their movements.
Raja’s body was discovered at the base of the gorge
on June 2, over a week after the attack. His identity was confirmed through his
mobile phone and smartwatch, found nearby.
The Arrests and Confessions
Sonam was later found disoriented at a roadside
dhaba in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on June 8, and taken into custody.
Raj Kushwaha was arrested soon after. During interrogation, both confessed to their
romantic involvement and their role in the murder.
Authorities have also arrested three other suspects
in Indore in connection with the case, who are believed to have helped tamper
with evidence and coordinate the crime.
On June 21, the court in Shillong remanded both
Sonam and Raj to 13 days of judicial custody.
Family Fallout and Public Outrage
The revelations have shocked both families. Sonam’s
brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, has publicly denounced her, saying, "We
are 100 per cent sure she committed this crime."
On the other side, Raj’s family claims he is being framed.
Tragically, Raj’s grandmother, reportedly distressed by his arrest, died of a
heart attack days later.
Raja’s grieving mother has demanded the death
penalty for all those involved.
What’s Next?
The Meghalaya Police are preparing a detailed charge
sheet, while further forensic analysis is underway. The case has sparked
conversations around marital betrayal, cyber-tracking, and personal safety
during travel.
With more arrests likely and pressure mounting for a
CBI probe, this case is far from over.
